LP+ Steps for early years and KS1

January 2007

LP+ Steps, an activities based e-learning platform interface for 4-7 year olds, was launched at BETT 2008. The National Curriculum has been built on the approach that children at Foundation and Key Stage 1 levels learn most effectively through play and activity. LP+ Steps is the first e-learning platform of its kind to centre on engaging children with playful but proven educational software tools which can be used across the curriculum, both at school and at home.

Children as young as four can use LP+ Steps to create pictures, practice letter formation, compose stories and then save their digital content in ‘My Site’, their very first personal e-portfolio. The platform has built-in tools to support these activities and a simple graphical interface which will appeal to younger learners.

Team work and home-school connection
LP+ Steps supports collaboration, allowing pupils to work in groups and view each others' work through the platform. The platform is also designed to enable greater engagement with parents and carers through a school-home resource facility which parents can use to help with their child’s homework, stay connected with teachers and extend the day’s learning to home.

Easy-to-use interface and lots of activities
The Steps interface guides children through the platform with intuitive images and icons which are easy to recognise and remember, making it ideal for children just learning to read. Once logged on to the platform pupils will be able to choose from the following activity areas:

  • My Paintings
  • My Writing
  • My Work
  • My Photos / My Sounds / My Movies
  • My Class Work

Teachers are provided with have access to a fully functional platform built on the Microsoft Learning Gateway Framnework and offering powerful tools for communication, collaboration and document and content management. Teachers can use LP+ Steps for email, planning classes, creating learning resources, integrating with SIMs management systems and maintaining direct links with parents.

As reported in Becta’s Harnessing Technology School’s Survey 2007, only 11% of UK primary schools have an e-learning platform, yet schools are expected to deliver personalised e-learning spaces for all pupils by the middle of 2008. LP+ can bridge the gap for primary school with LP+ Steps for 4-7 year olds and LP+ Safari for 7-11 pupils. A primary school can opt for a blend of these platforms to provide age-relevance and continuity for all of their learners.
